Ask Dr. Kaiser Question: I sero-converted in October 2000. Several months later, I was diagnosed with KS. I was not on antivirals prior to this and started soon after. At that time, my CD4=350 and my viral load was in the 200,000 range but then spiked sharply. Would I have been wise to try to eliminate the KS with chemo (we are now) and see what happens to the counts or would my best move be to go on anti-virals, as I did, and get the virus under control? Dr. Kaiser replies: While my first choice is to avoid the use of medications if possible(in favor of natural therapies), when an HIV viral infection is raging out of control, there is no other choice. I agree with your decision to go on antiviral therapy when you discovered that your viral load became high (over 100,000) and your KS was appearing. By combining antiviral therapies with the aggressive use of natural therapies however, your side effects can be minimal, your outcomes superior, and your quality of life can remain high.
