Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

Dr. Kaiser's April 2001 speech on HIV Treatment mentions dropping Co-enzyme Q10 from the supplement regimen. Why is that?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

Coenzyme Q-10 is a potent cofactor of the mitchondrial electron
transport chain. It directly facillitates the production of ATP which is the substance used by the cell to provide energy for its functioning.

Taking additional Co-Q10 as part of your nutritional supplement program has always made good philosophical sense. However, there have recently appeared a couple of other compounds that might be even more important to supplement than CoQ-10 to support healthy mitochondrial/cellular energy production. Because they appear to have of a great deal more research data supporting their efficacy in clinical studies, I have substituted their presence on my list for that of Co-Q 10.

Why not keep them all on the list? I would do that except I am sensitive to all the PWA's out there who would like to possibly avoid taking an addtional two pills a day which cost $30/month, if they don't absolutely have to. I might want to hold off on buying Co-Q 10 if I was in that position.
