Ask Dr. Kaiser Question: I was diagnosed with diabetes four months ago, but have been suffering with PN for about six years. The numbness is debilitating and has greatly changed the quality of my life. No doctor has been able to help me.I found out about Alpha-Lipoic Acid online and purchased it in bottles of 100 mg. I am taking four of these a day. Is this dose beneficial or does it have to be higher? They are quite expensive. Also, are there any side effects? I have many other health conditions. Dr. Kaiser replies: Peripheral Neuropathy is a disease of the nerves of the hands and/or feet that can cause substantial discomfort of pain, numbness, and/or tingling of the extremities. There are a variety of causes including HIV infection, diabetes, and medication side effects from drugs (such as antiviral medications and chemotherapy). There is good reason to believe that the nerve tissue become unhealthy due to a condition known as "oxidative stress". This means that, through the underlying disease process or from direct drug toxicity, the peripheral nerve cells become overloaded with cellular waste products and toxins. Antioxidants such as Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine have been shown in several small studies to help the nerve cells overcome this condition to varying extents. Other nutrients, such as Vitamins B6 and B12, and the minerals calcium and magnesium can also help support healthier nervous system function at the cellular level. The nutrients in Dr. Kaiser's Immune Support ProgramTM are present in the dosages that I have found to be necessary for maximum reversal of this condition. I have included Alpha-Lipoic Acid at a dosage level of 200 mg 2x/day in the formula in addition to Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500 mg 2x/day as well as Vitamin B6 at 130 mg 2x/day.
