Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

There is a method of testing for breast cancer which searches for
hot spots in the breasts. Do you know where I could get this test and if it is safe.

Dr. Kaiser replies:

The safety of mammograms has been a continuing topic of debate for
years. Some large studies have shown them to have good predictive value for saving lives and others have not.

The test you are referring to is called a thermogram and it locates areas of increased cellular activity ("hot spots") that often correlate with tumor activity. They are completely safe because they sense only heat. They do not pass radiation through the breast as with a mammogram. If you are uncomfortable getting routine mammograms, thermograms may provide a safer alternative. However, it is important to realize that this is a new technology that has not been proven effective and it is entirely dependent on the training and talent of the person reading them.
