Answers from Dr. Kaiser

Question:

I am considering going on a low carb (Atkins) diet for weight loss, but can't find info about this diet for HIV+ people. A couple HIV+ friends are also considering it. Do you have experience with folks on this diet, or thoughts about doing us doing so?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

The diet I recommend for my patients who are HIV(+) (in general) consists of a high protein, low sugar, and low fat diet. Obviously, every person is an individual who might need a some fine tuning but these are the basic guidelines. Please see the diet chapter of my book, Healing HIV: How to Rebuild Your Immune System for a complete diet program (1-888-Heal HIV).

Dr. Robert Atkin’s diet is an extremely low carbohydrate diet (< 25 grams per day) which means no sugar, fruit, baked goods, bread, potatoes, beans, carrots, corn, or grains. And that means no ice cream either! ! While minimizing sugar and sweets is generally good for the immune system, this level of dietary intensity is specifically designed to help people lose fat and lower triglyceride levels. This would obviously be good for some people with HIV but not good for others (i.e. Those with Lipoatrophy, Wasting Syndrome, etc.).

Even Eric Westman, M.D., the lead researcher who showed that following Dr. Atkin’s diet lowered triglyceride levels and promoted weight loss stated, “if someone has a medical problem or is taking medications, they should only do this diet under the supervision of a health care provider."

That is a statement that I agree with.
