Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

I'm living in Dublin Ireland, and I am involved in an HIV(+) organization which has an emphasis on alternative therapies. In fact, one of our staff met you in France a few years ago! I am also HIV(+). I am very interested in the self-help group you mention in your book "Healing HIV", and would like to know more about it. That is, how it works , is it facilitated by members , how is it structured and focused, etc. I am a recovering alcoholic familiar with AA but I'm interested in looking at a similar but wider group for HIV(+) people, not only recovering addicts. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dr. Kaiser replies:

Feeling supported by friends, family, and community is one of the most important assets a person with a chronic illness can have. By all means, seek to develop one for yourself and your community. You will be doing everyone involved a big favor. Medical research studies have found that patients who are positively thought about by others (i.e prayed for) do better and get less infections than those that are not. Every time you think about another person in a positive way you are supporting them spiritually and energetically.

That is one of the reasons I have set up an Online Support Group for HIV (link) on this website (www.jonkaiser.com). Hopefully, we can develop a worldwide network of HIV(+) individuals supporting other HIV(+) individuals in a mutually beneficial way, developing a healthier community in which to live.
