Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

Wonderful and resourceful web page you have! I am a medical student in Singapore. I have some questions relating to HIV to ask. These are the two questions:

Scenario #1:
If someone has an open rash on his feet (between his toes) and he baths with an HIV(+) person, presume the person is sexually aroused and produces some vaginal fluid, is there a chance for tap water to carry the HIV from the vagina to the open rashes and cause an infection?

Scenario #2,
Research show that sharing drinks will not transmit HIV. But if we presume a HIV+ victim has a cut on his/her lips and he/she share a glass of water with another person with cut on his/her lips will the virus be transmitted. In another words is water a media of HIV or is HIV water borne.

Dr. Kaiser replies:

Answer to Scenario #1: Dr. Kaiser says no! Tap water cannot carry enough organisms to cause an infection. It must be direct contact with semen, vaginal fluids, blood, urine, or stool. Saliva does not transmit HIV infection. Next...

Answer to Scenario #2: As Dr. Kaiser stated above...No! Tap water cannot carry enough organisms to cause an HIV infection.
