Vitamins

Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

A couple weeks ago, I started the vitamin & supplement protocol recommended in your book, Healing HIV. Since then I have developed diarrhea. I was wondering whether one of the vitamins I'm taking could be the likely cause, and what I can do to mitigate it. I'm taking 3TC, Zerit & DDI, but I have never had a problem with any of those drugs in the past. I have also been taking Doxicycline for a skin problem and wondered if that could be interacting with the acidophilus resulting in the diarrhea? My last VL is around 1000, and my CD4 count is 260 cells/mm3.

Dr. Kaiser replies:

Sometimes when a patients who previously had not been taking any significant amount of vitamin supplementation begins a new vitamin regimen, there can be a period of adjustment. The most likely culprit in the regimen I prescribe is the vitamin C. When 4 grams per day is immediately added to one’s supplement regimen, loose stools can result. The best way to remedy the situation is to cut the vitamin C dosage to 500 mg twice per day and increase it by an additional 500 mg twice daily one or two weeks later. A vitamin C dosage of 1,000mg 2x/day is definitely sufficient if you are also taking the other components of my vitamin regimen.

One additional point: You may want to think about getting a comprehensive stool analysis (such as that offered by the Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory). Since you are taking a daily antibiotic (Doxicycline), you may have a significant overgrowth of fungal organisms in your colon. This can easily be the the real reason why you are having difficulty tolerating the regimen. This condition can stress your immune system, will not go away on its own, and requires expert testing and analysis of the results to guide in the its treatment.

I hope this information has been helpful.
