Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

Can nevirapine cause symptoms that resemble "intoxication" or increase neuropathy?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

I have never seen a case of either "intoxication" or "peripheral neuropathy" caused directly from taking nevirapine. These are also not frequently mentioned side effects when reviewing studies using this medication. On the other hand, neviripine can act as a P450 CYP3A inducer and usually decreases the levels of other medications cleared by this liver enzyme system. Other drug-drug interactions may be playing a role here as well. A good website for checking drug-drug interactions is www.aidsmeds.com. Thanks you for your call as well.
