Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

I can't thank you enough for the information you have given me about
co-infections in the gut. My T-cell count went up from the 600's to 859 in three months after starting fresh yogurt (I do a lot of other stuff along with it.) Can you tell us anything about co-infections in the lungs?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

The immune system has quite enough to do fighting HIV itself that it
really appreciates not having a bunch of other coinfections to worry about at the same time. Genital herpes infections, intestinal parasites, intestinal fungal infections, and any other chronic or intermittent infection should be aggressively treated and suppressed to the best of your abilities. Even the addition of daily fresh yogurt (not store bought!!) to your diet can support a healthy intestinal environment to the point where the immune system is substantially benefited and the CD4 count rises.

Pulmonary coinfections are a bit more difficult to identify and treat.
Chronic bacterial bronchitis and/or sinusitis, pulmonary candida albicans, and pulmonary MAC should all be treated aggressively if boosts in immune strength and CD4 counts are desired and the benefits of the treatment outweighs the costs (exposure to strong antibiotics or fungal drugs). It should also be noted that daily cigarette smoking is the most important negative cofactor to the lungs and long term immune system health.
