Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

Anabolic steroids are recommended by a number of practitioners in HIV, and I am interested in taking Equipoise and Deca Durabolin for a cycle or two. I have read that steroids are a "cause" of prostate cancer. Is there valid evidence for this, or is it the aromatization of testosterone that is the cause? If the later, could it not be controlled with Arimidez?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

It has always been my philosophy to only introduce medications or hormones if there is a clear and defined medical need. That includes anabolic hormones as well as antiviral medications. For instance, if your body composition test shows below normal lean muscle mass or your blood test shows a less than optimal level of testosterone in combination with the symptoms of fatigue, depression, and/or low sex drive. These are some of the reasons to introduce anabolic hormone therapy. Additional details on this subject can be found in the Hormone Balancing chapter of my book Healing HIV.

To answer the second part of your question about a possible link to prostate cancer, there is a theoretical risk that adding testosterone or a synthetic testosterone derivative (such as Deca-durobolin) can spark the growth of latent cancer cells lying dormant within the prostate gland of men in their forties or older.
