Ask Dr. Kaiser Question: Is there a rough timetable upon which to start treatment from the time of HIV infection. I have been infected for six years now and still have great counts: CD4 cells of 1200 and a viral load of 3,800 copies. From what I have read it takes the virus about 7 years to break down the system or does it really depend on the person and their lifestyle?
Dr. Kaiser replies: The speed in which the immune system breaks down in the presence of an HIV infection varies tremendously and is affected by many variables. I call these variables cofactors and some of them include the presence of other infections such as herpes simplex, a protein-deficient diet, hormone deficiencies, inadequate intake of antioxidant vitamins, and the presence of intestinal parasites.By eliminating as many of cofactors as possible, a person raises the probability that the immune system will remain strong and be able to keep HIV contained for years without the use of antiviral drugs. In my book "Healing HIV", I give specific guidelines as to when an individual should consider adding antiviral medication as a means to enhance the benefits of their overall program. In general, this would only be recommended if there has been a clear and steady declining trend in your CD4 cells and/or a very high viral load. At the moment, with the numbers you have, it would not be recommended by myself or by the current government guidelines, for you to begin antiviral therapy. Check out our Message Board! |
