Ask Dr. Kaiser

Question:

Most HIV drugs focus on the different aspects of HIV reproduction in its genome. Are there any new and upcoming drugs that work on our immune system to enable it to work better and keep CD4 cell levels higher?

Dr. Kaiser replies:

Current HIV medications are grouped into categories that reflect the kind of HIV enzyme that is inhibited by the drug. This helps to block the virus's ability to reproduce. The current categories are 1) Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors 2) Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors 3) Protease inhibitors 4) Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (scheduled for release in 2002) and 5) Fusion inhibitors (also scheduled for release in 2002).

The only medications that may directly enhance the immune system's ability to fight HIV on its own and which also may be close to release in the next year or two include: IL-2 (an immune modulator that stimulates CD4 cell replication) and Remune (a HIV vaccine which stimulates the body's own anti-HIV defences.
